This is the stone from the large chunk of the 30.5 carat spinel crystal from my previous posts.  The stone is incredibly bright! The gem is featured on One World Gemstone in the August edition.

I call this gem the pumpkin.  It came from Madagascar and was bright orange when it was in the rough form.  The inclusions in the stone do something very interesting to light when it enters through the crown.  They make the stone into a darker more orangy brown color.  The gem reminds me of thanksgiving and fall which is why I call it The Pumpkin.

This is one unique cut.  I first learned of it from one of the online gemstone forums I belong to for faceters.  The cut combines two popular gemstone cuts, the asscher and the Portuguese round.  The Portuguese pavilion causes light reflections that look like a concave cut.  The stone is one my favorite new cuts and now one of my favorites out of the Mahenge Spinel parcel I received.
